Arrest Made in July Murder of Holly Carges
October 24, 2014

SALT LAKE CITY — Part of the department’s ongoing commitment to review the status of all sexual assault evidence kits in its custody, the Salt Lake City Police Department posted 20 new Code R Kit reviews to its website today.

“Code R Kit” is the term used to describe evidence collected by a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, a forensic nurse who examines victims of sexual assault.

Beginning in April 2014, Chief Burbank assigned four detectives with sexual assault investigations experience to review cases in which the Code R Kit was not sent to the state crime lab for DNA analysis. Balancing this assignment with their regular caseload, these detectives have been reviewing case files to identify which ones might benefit from new DNA-testing technology.

In response to concerns about victims’ privacy, the police department will redact the year of each case and the case summary in new public posts.

The new cases are posted in the tab below and on the main page for the project: www.slcpd.com/coderkits.

Warning:  The following material is graphic in nature. It is recommended for those 18 years and older only. Parental discretion is advised.
