Don’t leave idling car unattended

SALT LAKE CITY — Drivers who leave a vehicle idling but unattended this winter may wind up with a friendly reminder from police – if they’re lucky.

From November 2, 2012, to March 29, 2013, thieves stole at least 88 cars left idling and unattended, according to numbers provided by investigators from SLCPD’s Auto Theft Unit. As a result, officers will be looking for unattended, idling cars to leave drivers this friendly reminder:

Note: A city ordinance enacted in 2011 also prohibits the idling of vehicles within city limits for more than two minutes, although there is an exemption when temperatures drop below 32-degrees Fahrenheit. Parking Enforcement, part of Salt Lake City Public Services Compliance Division, enforces this ordinance.
