The Management Services Bureau includes:

Staff includes one commander, two lieutenants, three sergeants, training officers and office technicians.

  • Training Unit

    The Salt Lake City Police Department has been authorized by the State of Utah to function as a satellite Peace Officer and Standards Training (POST) Academy. This has allowed the department to meet the growing demand for producing quality, well-trained police officers.

    The Training Unit is responsible for arranging and facilitating all training provided to the recruit officers during the 21-week academy. In addition, the unit supervises the 14-week Field Training Officer (FTO) program which all recruits are required to pass before being certified for solo patrol. The Training Unit also provides thousands of hours of annual training and continuing education for in-service police employees.

    The unit provides two citizens’ academies throughout the year. These are geared toward providing a general overview and introduction to police work for members of the community. These mini-academies have been a very positive and enjoyable experience for those who attend.

  • Citizens Academy

    The Salt Lake City Police Department hosts a Citizens Academy at various times throughout the year for residents who want to become more acquainted with how the police department functions. After you fill out and submit the application, you will be contacted regarding upcoming dates for the Citizens’ Academy.

    During the three-day Academy, citizens will receive training in varied aspects of law enforcement, including the basics of patrol tactics, defensive tactics, firearms and many other subjects. “Cadets” will meet and talk with many of the members of the department. These courses will take place in a safe and entertaining training environment.

    Academy instructors are all law enforcement professionals, who teach both veteran police officers and new recruits. Participants will obtain a deeper understanding of the Police Department’s function, with an increased awareness of community partnership opportunities.

  • Internal Affairs (IA)

    The Internal Affairs Unit conducts administrative investigations into employee performance and conduct. The investigators work closely with representatives of the Civilian Review Board (CRB) and employee associations. The investigators are sergeants and above in rank within the Police Department. Investigators are trained on current case law as it pertains to administrative investigations. The Internal Affairs Unit maintains all of the files pertaining to alleged misconduct, police vehicle accidents, vehicle pursuits, officer involved shootings, and employee disciplinary histories.

    The CRB conducts an independent investigation with an independent investigator and volunteer board members. All complaints of excessive force are referred to the CRB. Persons may request the CRB investigate complaints not involving force. Such a request must be submitted within four business days of filing an internal affairs complaint. Complaints must be filed with the Internal Affairs Unit at the Police Department before the CRB has jurisdiction.

    Collaboration between the Internal Affairs investigators and the CRB helps ensure police accountability, as well as protection for police officers who have been falsely accused. It promotes greater trust between the police department and the community it serves.
