Investigations

The Investigations Division consists of the detective squads including: Crisis Intervention Team, Domestic Violence, Evidence/Crime Lab, Financial Crimes, Homicide, Robbery and Special Victims. These squads and units support and follow-up felony and misdemeanor crimes reported in the field operations. They all strive to bring reported crimes to a successful conclusion by thorough and diligent investigatory methods. The detectives assigned to these divisions interact frequently with the Salt Lake City Prosecutors and the District Attorney's Office to achieve an ultimate goal of conviction in court.
Crisis Intervention Team (CIT):
Crisis Intervention Teams (CIT) include specially trained law enforcement officers. These officers are trained in tactics to effectively deal with a situation involving a person experiencing a mental health crisis.
This program is a statewide program that builds strong working partnerships between law enforcement agencies and the mental health resources they utilize. These partnerships bring law enforcement and mental health services together instead of working independently on mental health issues. More Info...
Domestic Violence:
Salt Lake City's Victim Advocate Program has been developed to address the immediate needs of victims of violent crimes. The Victim Advocate Program is dedicated to assist, support, and provide information on available resources to the victims of crime.
The Victim Advocate Program offers support, referral, and direct services. All services are free! Support services include providing technical assistance by assisting victims with court documents, police procedures, and advocacy through the criminal justice Referral services include providing information and referrals pertaining to victim's rights, support groups, translation, counseling centers, and monetary support agencies. Direct services include providing transportation from our office to court and attending court with victims in a support capacity. More Info...
Evidence/Crime Lab:
The SLCPD Evidence Unit receives, catalogs, stores and releases property and evidence obtained by officers of SLCPD. The unit is comprised of four full time civilian "technicians," two part-time (retired) SLCPD police officers and a detective sergeant.
The Crime Lab Unit responds to field calls for service to process crime scenes for forensic evidence and photographs. Members of the Crime Lab also perform specialized forensic processing in a laboratory setting at the request of follow-up detectives. More Info...
Financial Crimes:
This unit is responsible for all financial crimes and specifically identity theft. Identity theft is when someone takes, uses, sells or transfers the "personal identifying information" of someone else without that person's approval, with the intent to use the information for an unlawful purpose. Homicide:
The Homicide Unit has a total of six detectives assigned to day-to-day operations. The unit also has one part-time retired detective working 20 hours a week.
Currently, the Homicide Unit handles all unattended deaths, suicides, homicides and cold cases, and reviews all ambulances calls. During 2008, adult missing people cases were added to the unit's list of responsibilities.
Robbery:
The Robbery Squad is primarily responsible for the following: robberies, weapons cases (concealed, brandishing or exhibiting, unlawful use or sale, unlawful discharge, unlawful possession, unlawful carrying of a loaded firearm, possession of unlawful weaspons), thefts by extortion and impersonating a police officer.
Special Victims:
The Special Victims Unit investigates sexually based offenses, juvenile related crimes and runaways and specializes in child victimization cases. The unit includes one sergeant and six detectives.
Detectives work in a multi-discipline team environment, which includes a close relationship with The Children's Justice Center, Division of Child and Family Services, Safe and Healthy Family, and the Rape Recovery Center. In addition, the Special Victims Unit is an active participant in the Children's Justice Center Advisory Board and the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners Advisory Board, and the training of new detectives and Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) workers from throughout the valley in the multi-discipline team concept.
