JOB SUMMARY:
A Police Officer performs a wide variety of police functions, including but not limited to: Crime repression, crime prevention, protection of personal liberties, regulation of non-criminal conduct, and provision of services. Police Officers are given specific work instructions by superior officers on new assignments, but work independently in performing regularly assigned duties.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduation from high school or possession of GED certificate.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen on/by the date of the first examination.
- Must be at least 21 years of age on/by the date of the first examination.
- Successful completion of Civil Service examination process which may include written examination, physical examination, background investigation, physical agility test, computer voice stress analysis, psychological examination, drug screen, and oral interview.
- Successful completion of Utah N.P.O.S.T. exam.
- Graduation from Police Officers Standards and Training Academy within six (6) months of hire.
- Considerable knowledge of criminal and civil law, and police techniques and tactics.
- Considerable human relations and communications skills.
- Ability to work independently, make critical decisions, and use initiative and common sense in a variety of police functions.
- Must have valid Utah Driver License or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
APPLICATION PROCESS:
To apply for this position, interested candidates must complete and submit an online application on the City’s website at www.slcgov.com. Candidates may fill out a paper application by going to the Human Resources Division located at in the City and County Building at 451 South State Street, Suite 115, Salt Lake City. Candidates must also submit a copy of their Utah N.P.O.S.T. results and POST Certificate (if applicable) at the time of application; otherwise, they will not be considered for the position of Police Officer. Applications and Utah N.P.O.S.T. scores and POST Certificate (if applicable) must be received prior to the designated application deadline. Applications turned in after the designated application deadline will not be accepted.

OUT OF STATE CANDIDATES must come to Utah to take the N.P.O.S.T. at one of the test sites and turn in their scores, as well. Salt Lake City Police Department does not offer this test.The N.P.O.S.T. Test consists of four timed sections: math; reading comprehension; grammar; and incident report writing.
The math component consists of 20 questions which are to be completed in 20 minutes. This section does not have any scientific math questions (algebraic or geometry); the questions consist of general math and financial math equations.
The reading comprehension section consists of 25 questions which are to be completed in 25 minutes. This section requires the candidate to read a series of short essays, and then choose the best answer(s) based on the information contained in the short essays.
The grammar section consists of twenty questions which are to be completed in 15 minutes. This section requires the candidate read several sentences and paragraphs, all of which contain misspelled words and improper punctuation. The candidate is required to identify the misspelled words and improper punctuation.
The incident report writing section consists of 10 questions which are to be completed in 15 minutes. The candidates are tested on their ability to write a clear and concise report based on facts they are given. Grammar and punctuation are tested in this section as well.
Since the N.P.O.S.T. Test is not administered all day, every day, all candidates are urged to call the testing center they will be taking the test at in advance to verify the dates and times the test will be administered.
