Salt Lake City Asks Parents to Join the
‘Take 25’ Child Safety Program

Campaign Identifies 25 Ways to Protect Children

SALT LAKE CITY – The Salt Lake City Mayor’s Office will join the Salt Lake City Police Department, Primary Children’s Medical Center and Salt Lake City School District, Thursday, May 27, 2010 at 10 a.m. at the Lincoln Elementary School Health and Safety Fair to promote the “Take 25” campaign.

Designed to encourage parents and caretakers to speak with children about implementing simple precautions to remain safe, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) “Take 25” campaign involves 25 ways to make kids safer. Children, families and communities are asked to take 25 minutes out of their day to talk about safety.

Among the 25 important safety tips are making sure children know their full name, address and phone number, teaching children how to use 911, utilizing the buddy system, as well as helping children recognize and avoid potential risks. The Safety Fair will provide an opportunity to discuss prevention tools needed to keep children safe as the school year ends.

“As we enter into the summer months, children are excited and encouraged to play outside. It’s important we raise awareness of children’s health and safety in our city,” said Mayor Ralph Becker.

Joanne Milner, education partnership coordinator for the mayor, agrees. “Parents and guardians need to take the time to talk about important safety tips with their children,” she said.
“Implementing the Take 25 program is a great way to talk to children about being safe.”
