SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department will host the Seattle Police Department Monday as that agency posthumously recognizes the sacrifice of one of its own.

Officer Mike Severance, Seattle PD, will meet with Salt Lake City resident Jean Evans to posthumously award the Medal of Honor to her father, Walter Cottle, who was shot in the line of duty Sept. 27, 1930, and died two days later.

The Washington Legislature created the Law Enforcement Medal of Honor in 1994. After witnessing several missed opportunities to give the awards to at least two officers’ widows before their deaths, Severance now leads Seattle PD’s effort to deliver medals into the rightful hands of surviving family members.

Media outlets are invited to attend Monday’s presentation at 1 p.m. in the Media Briefing Room of the Salt Lake City Public Safety Building, 475 S. 300 E.
