1700 S. Stewart St.
A 26-year-old woman was walking west along 1700 South from the water park when she noticed a man walking toward her, screaming as he approached. As he got closer, he grabbed the victim by the arm and attempted to take her cell phone. She was able to break free and run across 1700 South, and then used her phone to call for help. Officers converged on the area but were unable to find the suspect. He is described as a male white adult, 40-50 years of age, dirty and disheveled in appearance, with no shoes. He was last seen in the area of 1455 W. 1700 S. The victim was not injured.
1300 S. West Temple
Witnesses stated that a man jumped out of a car and began taking his clothes off, all the while threatening and cursing at passersby. Officers arrived on scene and saw him walking out into the crowded roadway, at which point they took him into custody. After medical cleared him, Herschel Stewart (4/31/81) was booked for public intoxication, disorderly conduct, and disturbing the peace.
During holiday celebrations at Liberty Park, a man grabbed onto a 6-year-old girl’s shoulder and began to guide her away from her family. A family friend saw what was happening, went over and grabbed hold of the girl to stop her from leaving with the suspect. The suspect continued to try to talk to the girl and get her to leave with him until confronted by an adult family member who alerted a nearby police officer. Trevor Daniel Merkley (4/1/72) was interviewed by detectives who booked him for felony child kidnapping.
Two small groups of people who knew each other began arguing and fist fighting. An 18-year-old man was stabbed in the abdomen. As his friend, another 18-year-old man, came forward to help him, that friend was also slashed by the same 20-year-old suspect. Gang investigators know the suspect and are actively searching for him. The injured teenagers were transported to the hospital and their condition has since stabilized.
