Man charged with murder after morning shooting

SALT LAKE CITY — Timothy Lutes, 26, was charged for the murder of Thomas Stanfield, 54, after a shooting that occurred at 140 E. 300 S. on June 20, 2018.

Stanfield was struck in the back and died at the scene. Next of kin notifications have been made.

Lutes, an armed security guard, was on duty when he encountered a trespasser at approximately 5:25 a.m. Lutes made contact with Stanfield and a physical altercation ensued.

Through the course of the investigation, detectives reviewed security camera video of the incident, which shows Stanfield walking away from Lutes several times, and Lutes reinitiating contact. Prior to the shooting, Stanfield is standing upright, facing away from Lutes and taking several steps away from Lutes, who fires his firearm, hitting Stanfield two times.

This remains an open and active investigation.
