SLCPD Investigating Shooting, SWAT Team Responds

SALT LAKE CITY — This morning, the Salt Lake City Police Department’s SWAT Team executed a court-authorized search warrant after a shooting critically injured a 57-year-old woman.

The shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The victim remains in critical but stable condition.

This investigation started at 11:44 p.m. on Thursday December 29, 2022, when a local hospital asked for SLCPD’s help investigating a woman’s injury, later determined to be a gunshot wound. Doctors initially considered the injury life-threatening.

During the investigation, officers learned a family member found the woman on the ground bleeding inside a duplex near Princeton Avenue and Lake Street. The family member called 9-1-1 for a medical response, including Gold Cross and Salt Lake City Fire. Paramedics took the woman to the hospital.

The initial on-scene medical response did not suggest anything criminal in nature, so SLCPD did not get dispatched to the scene until after hospital staff determined the woman’s injury was the result of a shooting.

Officers responded to the duplex, confirmed the woman lived at the duplex and secured her residence. Officers searched the residence looking for any evidence and to make sure no one else inside the home needed help.

Once officers secured the woman’s home, they backed out. Officers learned a person living in the duplex’s second unit had potential information about the woman’s injury and may have been the suspect. SLCPD patrol officers tried calling the person several times. Officers then tried using a loudspeaker to call the person out. Neither attempt was successful.

Due to the level and nature of the woman’s injury, detectives from both the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Homicide Squad and its Robbery and Violent Crimes Squad responded to assist with the investigation.

The SLCPD SWAT Team responded to execute a court-authorized search warrant. After securing the duplex, SWAT turned the scene over to detectives for processing.

During the search, the SLCPD SWAT Team located the suspect dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside his half of the duplex. Both the victim and shooter are known to each other, and this was not a random incident.

The injured woman remains at the hospital in critical but stable condition.

A Salt Lake City Police Department Public Information Officer (PIO) responded to the scene and provided updates to media.
