SLCPD Investigating Shooting During Soccer Game, 1 Person Critically Injured

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department is investigating a shooting that critically injured a 21-year-old man.

This investigation started at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Monday, May 1, 2023, when SLC911 received multiple calls about a shooting at 17th South River Park, which is located at 1150 West 1700 South.

Officers responded and found the victim on the soccer field with a critical gunshot wound. Officers provided emergency lifesaving efforts with the assistance of the Salt Lake City Fire Department.

Gold Cross Ambulance took the man to the hospital in critical condition.

According to witnesses, the shooter approached a pickup parked in the parking lot and started shooting.

Witnesses told officers the shooter then turned north and shot into the crowd on the soccer field.

There is only one known victim, as of this writing.

When the shooting happened, approximately 30 people, including children and teens, were on the soccer field either watching or participating in the game itself.

The shooter left the area before officers arrived. There is no known suspect description available.
