SLCPD Investigating Car Crash, 1 Person Killed

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department is investigating a crash that killed a 74-year-old man.

This investigation started at 12:58 p.m. on Friday, July 21, 2023, when patrol officers noticed a car crashed into a tree near 5040 West Harold Gatty Drive.

No other cars or pedestrians were involved.

Officers immediately started life-saving aid.

Salt Lake City Fire Department paramedics arrived and continued providing life-saving aid, but the man died on scene.

The Crash Analysis Reconstruction (CAR) Team and SLCPD Crime Lab technicians responded to the scene.

Detectives believe the driver likely suffered a medical episode prior to crashing into the tree.

The medical examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy to determine the official cause of death.

This crash marks the 11th traffic-related fatality in Salt Lake City for 2023.

The CAR Team is a multi-jurisdictional crash team that investigates crashes involving serious physical injuries or death. Members of the CAR Team receive specialized training in collision examination, speed analysis, vehicle dynamics, occupant kinematics, scene photography, surveying equipment, crash scene mapping, evidence collection and computer aided drawing programs.

The CAR Team includes law enforcement from the Salt Lake City Police Department and several other Salt Lake Valley law enforcement agencies.

Two photos taken from the scene are being released. Media may use these photos with credit to the Salt Lake City Police Department.

No further information about the man is being released until next of kin notifications are made.
