SLCPD Investigating Deadly Crash Inside Parking Garage

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department is investigating a car crash that killed a man.

This investigation started at 5:35 a.m. on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, when SLC911 took a call from a driver who reported they hit someone in a parking garage near 549 West 200 South.

Salt Lake City Fire Department paramedics found the man and took him to the hospital where he later died.

Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives believe the man was on the ground sleeping against the parking garage door. When the garage door opened, the driver hit the man.

There is no evidence to suggest this was an intentional crash. The driver remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

Officers are working with the medical examiner’s office to confirm the identity and age of the man who died and to notify his next-of-kin.

The Crash Analysis Reconstruction (CAR) Team, SLCPD Crime Lab technicians and a SLCPD Public Information Officer (PIO) responded to the scene.

This crash marks the 15th traffic-related fatality in Salt Lake City for 2023.

The CAR Team is a multi-jurisdictional crash team that investigates crashes involving serious physical injuries or death. Members of the CAR Team receive specialized training in collision examination, speed analysis, vehicle dynamics, occupant kinematics, scene photography, surveying equipment, crash scene mapping, evidence collection and computer aided drawing programs.

The CAR Team includes law enforcement from the Salt Lake City Police Department and several other Salt Lake Valley law enforcement agencies.
