SLCPD Identifies Person Killed in Downtown Homicide, Tips Requested

SALT LAKE CITY — Today, Salt Lake City Police Department released the identity of the 23-year-old man, Rory Swimm, shot and killed in downtown early Friday morning.

This investigation started at 1:43 a.m. on Friday, October 13, 2023, when a community member called 9-1-1 and reported someone down on the ground at 600 East 200 South.

Salt Lake City Fire and Gold Cross Ambulance responded.

During life-saving efforts, emergency crews realized Swimm had been shot.

Swimm died on scene.

Additional SLCPD officers responded to help secure the scene and to start looking for any suspects or witnesses.

Detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Homicide Squad are asking community members who live or work within the area of 100 – 400 South to 500 – 700 East to review home or business security cameras between 1:15 a.m. and 2 a.m. on Friday, October 13, 2023. Detectives are interested in reviewing any footage that may show a group of people walking together or any vehicles coming or leaving the area at a high rate of speed.

Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives believe Swimm got into an argument with the suspect, or suspects, and that someone shot Swimm as he stood near the southwest corner of 600 East 200 South.

The suspect, or suspects, then got into a car and left the area.

It is possible the suspect or suspects may have ditched evidence behind. Anyone who finds anything suspicious is instructed not to touch or move the object and instead call 9-1-1 so officers can investigate.

Detectives do not believe there is any immediate threat to the community. Based on the information provided to detectives, the suspect, or suspects, likely had an argument with the victim prior to the shooting.

This is the 14th homicide in Salt Lake City for 2023.

No further information on this case is available for release at this point.
