SLCPD Investigating Deadly Hit-and-Run Crash on State Street

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department is investigating a deadly hit-and-run crash in downtown.

This investigation started at 7:48 p.m. on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, when SLC911 received reports of a crash involving a person at 700 South State Street.

A Salt Lake City Police sergeant assigned to the Liberty Patrol Division happened to be in the area and immediately responded.

The sergeant found community members performing life-saving measures.

Salt Lake City Fire and Gold Cross Ambulance took the victim, a woman in her 40s, to the hospital in critical condition.

Despite life-saving efforts, the woman died during transport.

The driver did not stop and continued in an unknown direction.

“We have witnessed an alarming number of deadly hit and run crashes in the past two weeks,” said Chief Mike Brown. “I want to make it unequivocally clear — this behavior is unacceptable. I strongly urge the drivers involved in these recent crashes to turn themselves in. These tragedies have left lasting scars on families, and your cooperation is not just a legal obligation but a moral one.”

There were multiple witnesses to this crash.

Officers are working to gather additional information, including the description of the driver and the car itself.

As of 8:30 p.m., on October 25, 2023, all northbound traffic on State Street is being diverted either east or west. Southbound traffic on State Street is not impacted. However, depending on the needs of investigators, additional road closures may be necessary.

Anyone with information on this crash is asked to call 801-799-3000.

This crash marks the 19th traffic-related death in Salt Lake City for 2023.

The Collision Analysis & Reconstruction (CAR) Team and SLCPD Crime Lab technicians responded to the scene.

The CAR Team is a multi-jurisdictional crash team that investigates crashes involving serious physical injuries or death. Members of the CAR Team receive specialized training in collision examination, speed analysis, vehicle dynamics, occupant kinematics, scene photography, surveying equipment, crash scene mapping, evidence collection and computer aided drawing programs.

The CAR Team includes law enforcement from the Salt Lake City Police Department and several other Salt Lake Valley law enforcement agencies.

No further information on this case is being released. Neither the PIO nor the On-Duty Watch Commander are available for interviews.
