SLCPD Gang Detectives Arrest Second Person Connected to Edison Street ShootingSALT LAKE CITY — Detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department have arrested a 19-year-old man who is accused of obstructing an investigation into a shooting that injured one person. This investigation began at 12:16 a.m. on Sunday, October 8, 2023, when SLC911 received multiple calls about a shooting that had just occurred near 923 South State Street. As officers arrived, they found one man had been shot. Paramedics took the man to the hospital with a non-life-threatening injury. For more information on the shooting, please click here. On Wednesday, December 6, 2023, detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Gang Unit safely arrested Rene Chacon and booked him into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on a single count of obstruction of justice. During the investigation, detectives learned Chacon attended a large party near 900 South Edison Street, witnessed the shooting, and then ran to a car with the accused shooter. Both Chacon and the accused shooter left the area before police arrived. Detectives interviewed Chacon as part of the investigation. Court documents allege Chacon lied to detectives. Through their investigation, detectives determined Chacon drove the alleged shooter from the scene to help him escape. On Friday, December 1, 2023, with the assistance of the Salt Lake City Police Department’s SWAT Team, the Gang Unit executed a court-authorized search warrant on a residence as part of the investigation. They arrested the accused shooter without incident. Court documents further allege that Chacon is a gang associate involved in the criminal distribution of controlled substances. Chacon is currently being held on no bail. Detectives believe, due to his continued criminal behavior, Chacon constitutes a substantial danger to the community. Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Gang Unit is responsible for investigating gang-related crimes that occur within the city’s jurisdiction. The unit consists of highly trained uniformed officers and detectives who work collaboratively with patrol divisions and other specialty squads within the SLCPD to gather information and focus on preventing gang and gun violence through education, prevention, and enforcement.
