SLCPD Investigating Critical Injury Crash Involving Motorcyclist in DowntownSALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department is investigating a critical injury crash in the Central City neighborhood involving a motorcyclist and a small crossover utility vehicle. This investigation started at 5:25 p.m. on Monday, March 18, 2024, when SLC911 received multiple calls about a crash near 350 South 200 East. Detectives are working to conduct a full crash reconstruction but based on the preliminary investigation, a Mazda CX5 and a motorcyclist collided on 200 East. The crash critically injured the motorcyclist. Paramedics took the injured man, a 28-year-old, to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The motorcyclist did not appear to be wearing a helmet. The driver of the Mazda, a 61-year-old woman, remained on scene and is cooperating. Officers have closed 200 East in both directions between 300 and 400 South. The road closure is expected to last for several hours. Due to the injury severity, the Collision Analysis & Reconstruction (CAR) Team and SLCPD Crime Lab technicians responded to the scene. The CAR Team is a multi-jurisdictional crash team that investigates crashes involving serious physical injuries or death. Members of the CAR Team receive specialized training in collision examination, speed analysis, vehicle dynamics, occupant kinematics, scene photography, surveying equipment, crash scene mapping, evidence collection and computer aided drawing programs. The CAR Team includes law enforcement from the Salt Lake City Police Department and several other Salt Lake Valley law enforcement agencies. The department’s Police Community Response Team (PCRT) responded to assist with the initial medical assessment, scene stability, and traffic control. No further information on this case is being released. Neither the PIO nor the On-Duty Watch Commander are available for interviews. No photos from the scene are available for release.
