SLCPD Investigating Critical Injury, High-Speed Crash

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department is investigating a high-speed crash that injured three people in the Foothill/Sunnyside neighborhood.

This investigation started at 4:58 p.m. on Sunday May 12, 2024, when SLC911 received multiple calls about a crash involving two SUVs at the intersection of 1300 South 2100 East.

The Salt Lake City Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance arrived on scene and found two men injured inside a subcompact Audi SUV. Paramedics took both men to the hospital. One patient is in critical condition with potentially life-threatening injuries. The second patient is in serious condition.

Based on the preliminary investigation, the driver of a Toyota SUV, traveling west on 1300 South hit the Audi as it traveled south on 2100 East.

The collision resulted in a significant impact that pushed the Audi into a nearby parking lot.

The Toyota SUV came to a stop approximately 100 yards west of the intersection.

Witnesses told officers the driver of the Toyota exited his SUV and started running away.

Community members stopped the man and held him down until officers arrived and took him into custody.

Paramedics took the driver of the Toyota SUV to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Detectives are investigating reports that the driver of the Toyota SUV ran a red light.

The debris field and trajectory of both SUVs indicate that speed played a role in this crash.

The Collision Analysis & Reconstruction (CAR) Team and SLCPD Crime Lab technicians responded to the scene.

The CAR Team is a multi-jurisdictional crash team that investigates crashes involving serious physical injuries or death. Members of the CAR Team receive specialized training in collision examination, speed analysis, vehicle dynamics, occupant kinematics, scene photography, surveying equipment, crash scene mapping, evidence collection and computer aided drawing programs.

The CAR Team includes law enforcement from the Salt Lake City Police Department and several other Salt Lake Valley law enforcement agencies.

Several photos from the scene are being released. Media may use these photos with credit to the Salt Lake City Police Department.
