SLCPD Gang Unit Arrest Two Men Connected to April 6th Shooting

SALT LAKE CITY — Detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Gang Unit have arrested a 24-year-old man and a 23-year-old man, who are accused of shooting and injuring each other in a Glendale neighborhood on April 6, 2024.

On Friday, May 24, 2024, detectives safely arrested and booked 24-year-old Luis Alfaro into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on charges of unlawful possession of a dangerous weapon, two counts of felony discharge of a firearm, obstruction of justice, and aggravated assault.

On Wednesday, May 29, 2024, detectives safely arrested and booked 23-year-old Christian Miramontes into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on charges of felony discharge of a firearm, aggravated assault, and possession of a stolen firearm.

Both Alfaro and Miramontes were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

This investigation started shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2024, when SLC911 received information about a person injured at a home near 1050 West 300 South. Patrol officers, officers with the Pioneer Patrol Division Bike Squad, and detectives with the SLCPD Gang Unit responded.

Detectives believe a fight between Alfaro and Miramontes led to them shooting each other.

During the investigation, detectives served a court-authorized search warrant at Miramontes’ home and recovered a stolen rifle.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Additional arrests in this case are possible.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.

The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Gang Unit plays a crucial role in addressing gang-related crimes within the city’s jurisdiction. The SLCPD Gang Unit includes highly trained, uniformed officers and detectives. The unit collaborates with patrol divisions and other specialty squads within the department to gather crucial intelligence and prioritize efforts in preventing gang and gun violence through education, prevention, and enforcement. The department’s Gang Unit is vital to the overall safety and wellbeing of the city because the detectives assigned to this unit specialize in understanding the dynamics of gang culture, affiliations, and criminal activities. This knowledge enables the unit to effectively disrupt gang operations and prevent violence. Their proactive approach within the city helps to safeguard communities by identifying and addressing potential threats before they escalate. The collaborative nature of the SLCPD’s Gang Unit, both within the department and with external partners, enhances information sharing and coordination, enabling comprehensive responses to gang-related issues. Through their efforts, the SLCPD Gang Unit contributes significantly to enhancing public safety, fostering community trust, and reducing the impact of gang activity in the city.
