SLCPD Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) Safely Arrests Shooting Suspect

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) safely arrested a fugitive wanted in connection to a wintertime shooting.

This investigation started at 12:21 a.m. on Thursday, February 1, 2024, when Salt Lake City police officers responded to reports of someone with a gunshot wound near 1500 West Gillespie Avenue.

Officers arrived and found a man with a gunshot wound.

Paramedics took the man to the hospital in serious condition.

Detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Violent Crime and Robbery Squad began an investigation.

On Friday, June 21, 2024, a judge approved a no-bail warrant for the arrest of 37-year-old Kenneth Ray Washington III.

The district attorney’s office, on behalf of the State of Utah, filed a single count of felony discharge of a firearm – shooting in the direction of another person and resulting in serious bodily injury.

At approximately 10 p.m. on Friday, June 21, 2024, detectives with the SLCPD’s VCAT found a car belonging to Washington near 1000 South Main Street.

VCAT detectives safely arrested Washington and booked him into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.

No further information on this case is being released. Neither the PIO nor the on-duty watch commander are available for interviews.

The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) is a specialized unit within the department tasked with combating violent crime by identifying and apprehending violent criminals and fugitives.

Established to address emerging violent crime trends and the activities of repeat violent offenders in Salt Lake City, the SLCPD’s VCAT coordinates with detectives, patrol officers, the Salt Lake Information Center (SLIC), and the SLCPD’s Crime Intelligence and Analysis Unit (CIAU) to identify and apprehend violent offenders.
