SLCPD Central Bike Squad Focuses on Reducing Loud Parties Through Education, Outreach Effort

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Central Patrol Division Bike Squad furthered the SLCPD’s mission of promoting community engagement by conducting outreach and education to reduce noise coming from large parties in the East Central Neighborhood.

On Thursday, August 29, 2024, the Salt Lake City Police Department reminded community members about the importance of celebrating college football season responsibly.

Each year, the Salt Lake City Police Department receives an influx of public order-related calls for service during football season. These calls for service may include large parties, noise complaints, illegal parking, underage drinking, fights, and public indecency.

On Thursday, August 29, 2024, officers on their bikes and in patrol cars worked between 400 – 600 South from 1000 East – 1300 East.

The officers contacted several large parties before 10 p.m. and after 10 p.m. to remind them about the city’s noise ordinance.

Each group officers contacted was very respectful.

In addition to the bike patrol, marked units drove around the neighborhood with their red and blue lights on cruise mode (non-flashing) to serve as a visible presence.

Officers also received positive feedback from neighbors who have been impacted by the loud parties.

Everyone contacted appreciated the presence of officers.

Officers contacted nearly 10 houses with active parties occurring.

Officers did not have to issue any citations.

The video is being released for a law enforcement purpose to highlight the professionalism of officers and to show the respect and cooperation they received from community members.

The Salt Lake City Police Department reminds all community members hosting parties to take the appropriate steps to ensure safety and that they are following city and state law.

Generally, as they relate to parties, the Salt Lake City Police Department is sharing the following information — the City’s noise regulation prohibits loud noise between the hours of 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. The regulation also sets limits for extremely loud noise during daytime hours.

Any person hosting a party, gathering, or event within the city may be liable for services fees each time a police officer responds to a call for service to deal with a party with violations. Any services fee may be in addition to such other costs and penalties.

To help ensure the SLCPD is provided timely information and that resources are used appropriately while keeping the community safe, community members should use 9-1-1 to report emergency situations that include:

• Fights in progress
• People with weapons
• Criminal mischief
• Drug use or underage drinking
• Blockage of public right-of-way
• Medical emergencies like drug overdose or alcohol poisoning

In non-emergency situations such as a loud house party (noise complaints) without additional risks, community members should call 801-799-3000.

Finally, to stay safe, avoid operating a motor vehicle when impaired, whether by alcohol, drugs, or fatigue. It’s crucial to rely on good conflict resolution skills to defuse tense situations calmly and effectively. If you ever encounter a dangerous situation, report it immediately by calling 9-1-1.
