SLCPD Gang Unit Arrests 21-Year-Old Accused of Being Involved in Glendale Neighborhood Shooting

SALT LAKE CITY — Detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Gang Unit have safely arrested a 21-year-old man accused of being involved in a shooting that injured a 55-year-old woman in the Glendale neighborhood.

This investigation started at approximately 10:45 p.m. on Saturday, August 10, 2024, when SLC911 received information about a shooting near Concord Street and California Avenue.

Officers arrived and learned two people approached a house and started shooting into it.

At least one of the rounds fired traveled into the home, hitting the 55-year-old woman.

Paramedics took the woman to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Detectives with the SLCPD Gang Unit took over the investigation and developed information about the case.

On Friday, August 30, 2024, detectives located Sam Keith Maez Ripley. Detectives booked Ripley into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on one count of aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury, being in unlawful possession of a dangerous weapon as a restricted person, and 14 counts of felony discharge of a firearm resulting in serious bodily injury.

This is the second arrest in this case.

The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Gang Unit is essential in combating gang-related crimes. The unit of skilled and highly trained officers and detectives collaborates with patrol divisions and other specialty squads to gather intelligence and prevent gang and gun violence through education, prevention, and enforcement. The unit’s understanding of gang culture allows them to disrupt operations and prevent violence effectively. By working proactively and with various partners, the Gang Unit enhances public safety, fosters community trust, and reduces gang activity in the city.

No further information on this case is being released.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
