SLCPD Investigating Downtown Shooting, 1 Person Killed, Suspect in Custody

SALT LAKE CITY — Officers and detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) are investigating a deadly shooting that occurred in downtown.

The suspected shooter is in custody.

This investigation started at 12:18 p.m. on Saturday, October 5, 2024, when SLC911 received multiple reports of a shooting near 200 South State Street.

Officers in the area responded and found a man with at least one gunshot wound on the ground in the parking lot behind the Maverik, located at 185 South State Street.

Officers and firefighters with the Salt Lake City Fire Department provided life-saving efforts, but the man died on scene.

Officers safely took a suspect into custody near 200 South 300 East.

The specific circumstances of the shooting are unknown.

At this time, the shooting does not appear to be a random incident.

There is no information to suggest the shooting had any connection to General Conference 2024.

Anyone who has information about this shooting, including photos and video, and who has not already talked to police is urged to call 801-799-3000 and ask to speak with an officer.

There are no road closures associated with this incident. However, several sidewalks near the crime scene are closed to preserve evidence on scene.

The SLCPD Homicide Squad will work with the medical examiner’s office to confirm the man’s name, age, cause of death and to notify next-of-kin.

The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Homicide Squad is the only full-time dedicated homicide squad in the State of Utah. The squad is responsible for handling all homicides, as well as the city’s attended deaths, unattended deaths, suspicious deaths, and deaths by suicide. The squad is also tasked with investigating missing persons cases and officer involved shootings/critical incidents (OICI) from other agencies in Salt Lake County.

Two photos from the scene are being released. Media may use these photos with credit to the Salt Lake City Police Department.
