SLCPD Provides Update on Downtown Shooting, Suspect Charged with Murder

SALT LAKE CITY — The 49-year-old man accused of shooting and killing a 30-year-old man in downtown is being charged with murder and felony discharge of a firearm resulting in serious bodily injury.

The suspect is identified as Farshad Hassan-Pouri.

This investigation started at 12:18 p.m. on Saturday, October 5, 2024, when SLC911 received multiple calls about a shooting near 200 South State Street.

When officers got on scene, they found a man on the ground behind 185 South State Street with multiple gunshot wounds.

Despite emergency lifesaving efforts performed by community members, officers, firefighters, and paramedics, the man died on scene.

After the shooting, witnesses followed Hassan-Pouri and alerted officers to his location.

When officers found Hassan-Pouri near 200 East 300 South, they safely took him into custody and found him in possession of a firearm.

Detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Homicide Squad responded.

Detectives learned a verbal argument occurred between Hassan-Pouri and the victim.

The circumstance of the argument remains under investigation.

During the argument, Hassan-Pouri is accused of pulling out a gun, shooting the victim, chasing him, and shooting again.

The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Crime Lab and Evidence Unit responded to the scene to identify, collect, and process the evidence on scene.

The victim’s name is not being released at this time.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.

The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Homicide Squad is the only full-time dedicated homicide squad in the State of Utah. The squad is responsible for handling all homicides, as well as the city’s attended deaths, unattended deaths, suspicious deaths, and deaths by suicide. The squad is also tasked with investigating missing persons cases and officer involved shootings/critical incidents (OICI) from other agencies in Salt Lake County.
