SLCPD Warns About Increasing Car Burglaries Occurring Near Haunted House Attractions

SALT LAKE CITY —The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) is providing safety tips to help prevent car burglaries after seeing a recent increase in car break-ins occurring near haunted house attractions.

Vehicle burglaries are down, citywide, by 25% this year when compared to 2023.

However, the SLCPD has seen a recent and sharp increase in these crimes around 800 South 600 West.

Since September 1, 2024, there have been 20 reported car burglaries around 800 South 600 West compared to just four in 2023 during the same period.

Car burglaries are often crimes of opportunity and can occur when valuables or other items are left visible inside a car, or when the car is left unlocked.

Often, thieves will take advantage of these easy targets, and a break-in can happen in mere seconds.

Community members are urged to never leave valuables, including firearms, in their cars unattended.

People are encouraged to park in well-lit areas, lock their doors, and keep items out of sight. We would also urge the community to be vigilant and if you see something that appears to be suspicious call 9-1-1 or our non-emergency number 801-799-3000.

To address this recent spike in crime, the SLCPD’s Liberty Patrol Division is coordinating resources and teaming up with detectives and the SLCPD’s Crime Intelligence and Analysis Unit.

The SLCPD is also conducting outreach efforts to businesses and visitors in the impacted area.

A short public service announcement is also being released.
