SLCPD Investigating Domestic Violence-Related Shooting, Suspect ArrestedSALT LAKE CITY — Officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) have safely arrested a 17-year-old male who is accused of shooting his 19-year-old roommate in the Glendale neighborhood. Because the suspect is under the age of 18, his name is not being released. This investigation started on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at 11:52 p.m. when SLC911 received a call of a shooting that had just occurred near 700 West North Temple Street. Paramedics took the 19-year-old to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Based on the preliminary investigation, officers have learned a fight occurred between the two teens over a watch, which escalated into a shooting. Officers found the suspect nearby and safely took him into custody after a short foot chase. Officers booked the suspect into the Salt Lake County Juvenile Detention Center on charges of aggravated assault, felony discharge of a firearm resulting in serious bodily injury, minor with possession of a firearm, and failing to stop at the command of law enforcement. Utah’s domestic violence laws apply to people who live together, such as roommates, whether they are in a relationship or not. Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos. The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change.
