SLCPD SWAT Team Safely Arrests Domestic Violence, Kidnapping Suspect

SALT LAKE CITY — Today, the Salt Lake City Police Department’s SWAT team, patrol officers, and crisis negotiators safely arrested a 40-year-old man who is accused of holding a woman against her will and then barricading himself inside an apartment.

The suspect is identified as Michael Dayley.

This investigation started at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 31, 2024, when SLC911 received a call about a man refusing to let a woman leave an apartment unit, located at 1925 West North Temple Street.

Based on the preliminary information, the woman and Dayley know each other from a prior relationship.

Officers arrived on scene and tried communicating with Dayley and the woman inside.

At 7:30 p.m., the woman used a ladder to safely climb down from the apartment.

Officers took the woman to a secure area and made sure she did not have any physical injuries.

Officers tried to contact Dayley several times, but he refused to come out.

The on-scene incident commander requested the assistance of the SLCPD SWAT team and crisis negotiators. These highly trained teams provide patrol officers with additional resources.

Around 11 p.m., SWAT officers entered the apartment, under a court-authorized search warrant, and began having direct conversations with Dayley.

A short time later, officers safely took Dayley into custody.

Officers will book Dayley into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on charges of aggravated kidnapping, violating a protective order, possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, interfering with an arresting officer, and intoxication.

There are no reported injuries.

Two photos from the scene are being released. Media may use these photos with credit to the Salt Lake City Police Department.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.

The Salt Lake City Police Department reminds our community of the resources available to support survivors of domestic violence in Utah.
