SLCPD Conducts Proactive Enforcement Operation to Address Crime on North Temple StreetSALT LAKE CITY — Officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Pioneer Patrol Division, in cooperation with the SLCPD’s Liberty Patrol Division, conducted a proactive enforcement operation to address crime along North Temple Street after receiving information about criminal activity. As a result of the operation, SLCPD officers arrested nine people on various criminal charges. In late October 2024, the SLCPD received information about several people potentially burglarizing and criminally trespassing inside several former motel rooms, located at 1990 West North Temple Street. The location will be one of the temporary winter overflow shelters, set to open later this month. The SLCPD continues to work with the shelter’s management to develop a safety and security plan for employees and residents. During the conversion from motel to shelter, several people gained access to more than 10 rooms and refused to leave when asked by management. Staff also told SLCPD that some of the individuals criminally trespassing intimidated shelter workers. On October 29, 2024, officers assigned to the SLCPD’s Pioneer and Liberty patrol division bike squads went to the shelter and worked with management to contact those occupying the rooms illegally. Officers contacted 13 people and made nine arrests. The shelter’s management secured the rooms and are continuing their efforts to prepare the rooms for winter shelter. During the contact, officers found several people with outstanding warrants and some in possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia. Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
