SLCPD Airport Officers Safely Arrest Road Rage Suspect Following Shooting Investigation

SALT LAKE CITY — Today, the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) is announcing the arrest of a 57-year-old man who is accused of shooting a firearm during an alleged road rage incident.

“Unfortunately, cases of road rage, as alleged here, can absolutely threaten our community, and put lives at risk,” said Chief Mike Brown. “The allegations in this case are serious, and I appreciate the thoroughness of our officers investigating this case and who are working to keep our city safer.”

This investigation started at 4:01 p.m. on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, when officers assigned to the SLCPD’s Airport Division learned about a man with a weapon near 340 North 2370 West.

Based on the preliminary investigation, a 32-year-old man changed lanes near 2600 South and Interstate 15 in Davis County and cut off another driver.

The other driver is identified as Peter Lyons.

It is alleged Lyons started following the other driver, claiming he thought the 32-year-old man was driving while impaired.

The incident turned into a moving road rage incident, eventually coming into Salt Lake City. It is alleged Lyons hit the other man’s car, causing minor damage.

During the incident, Lyons is accused of shooting one round from a handgun through his windshield. Lyons told officers the 32-year-old man had a bat and that he feared for his safety.

No injuries were reported.

During their investigation, officers did not observe any evidence to suggest the 32-year-old man was impaired, nor did they find any evidence resembling a bat.

Officers booked Lyons into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on a single count of aggravated assault with a road rage enhancement.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.

The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Airport Patrol Division encompasses multiple patrol squads and includes a full-time K9 Squad.

The Airport Patrol Division provides law enforcement services at the Salt Lake City International Airport and the areas near the airport. Officers patrol the airport terminals, parking lots, and surrounding areas to deter criminal activity, respond to emergencies, and enforce laws.

TSA-trained explosive detection K9 teams respond to suspicious items in addition to patrolling airport property.

The Airport Patrol Division is responsible for helping to ensure the safety and security of passengers, airport personnel, and airport facilities at the largest airport in Utah.

Detectives assigned to the Airport Patrol Division investigate crimes that occur on airport property, such as theft, vandalism, assault, and various crimes occurring in-flight and work closely with our federal law enforcement partners. They are also attached to the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force to keep us apprised of any emerging or imminent threats.

The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change.
