SLCPD Officers Arrest Man Accused of Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Animal Cruelty

SALT LAKE CITY — Today, officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Central Patrol Division safely arrested a 47-year-old man who is accused of stabbing a man and two dogs.

This investigation started at 5:47 p.m. on Monday, November 11, 2024, when SLC911 received information about a man stabbed at a motel, located at 176 West 600 South.

Patrol officers arrived on scene and began life-saving efforts.

Paramedics with the Salt Lake City Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance took the victim to the hospital in stable condition.

During their investigation, officers learned the suspect, Carl Henry, and the victim, a motel employee, got into an argument after their dogs started fighting.

The victim told officers he tried separating the two fighting dogs but Henry made no attempt to intervene.

Based on the preliminary investigation, Henry stabbed the victim’s dog and then stabbed the victim multiple times.

Henry is also accused of stabbing his own dog in the neck.

After the stabbing, Henry is accused of running away from the scene.

Officers searched the area looking for Henry but they could not find him.

At 11:20 a.m. on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, SLC911 received information that Henry returned to the hotel.

Officers quickly came up with a safety plan to arrest Henry.

Officers approached Henry inside the motel and arrested him without incident.

The SLCPD does not have any update on either dog, nor do we know their names, age, or breed.

Henry is being charged with aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury and aggravated cruelty to animals.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.

The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change.
