Explorer Pin

SLCPD Explorers to be Recognized as ‘Guardians
of The Fallen’ by Utah Law Enforcement Memorial
Pinning ceremony slated for 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Utah Capitol

SALT LAKE CITY— The Utah Law Enforcement Memorial will present its newly-created Memorial Guardians pin to Salt Lake City Police Explorer Post #2471 during a first-of-its-kind ceremony on the west lawn of the Utah State Capitol Tuesday afternoon.

The ULEM board of directors created the unique pin for the 40 Police Explorers who have watched over its Fallen Officers memorial since November 2013. As “Guardians of the Fallen,” the all-volunteer group of young men and women, ages 14-20, will take part in a variety of events at the site this week, including:

  • Tues., April 29: Pinning ceremony, 4:30 p.m.
  • Wed., April 30: Clean memorial, post flags for the fallen; 4:30 p.m.
  • Thurs., May 1: Utah Law Enforcement Annual Memorial, 11 a.m.

Each week Salt Lake City Police Explorers ensure the memorial is properly maintained and looking sharp. In addition to May’s memorial service, they also will assist with the Fallen Law Enforcement Memorial Ride in August.

The public is invited to observe all events as the Explorer Post prepares to help honor Draper Sgt. Derek Johnson and Utah County Sgt. Cory Wride, whose names will be added to the ULEM Honor Wall on the west lawn of the Capitol. The Honor Wall already bears the names of 135 Utah peace officers killed in the line-of-duty.
