SLCPD Gang Unit Arrest Man, Recover Gun and Stolen Truck

SALT LAKE CITY — Overnight, the Salt Lake City Police Department Gang Unit arrested a 24-year-old man accused of illegally possessing a gun, drugs and stolen truck.

This investigation started at 2:23 a.m. on Thursday, August 18, 2022 when a SLCPD gang detective spotted a person driving a stolen truck into a motel parking lot near 800 West North Temple Street.

Detectives walked up to the driver, later identified as Martin Olmedo, to take him into custody but Olmedo ran. Detectives saw Olmedo take off a satchel and toss several items from his pockets.

After a short foot chase, detectives safely took Olmedo into custody.

Detectives recovered a gun, illegal drugs, and the keys to the stolen truck.

The drugs included suspected methamphetamine, heroin, oxycodone pills, and fentanyl.

Detectives booked Olmedo into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on the following charges: Theft by Receiving Stolen Property, Failure to Stop at the Command of a Police Officer, two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Possession of a Firearm by a Restricted Person.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.

A photo of the gun and illegal drugs are being released.

There is no other information to release at this time.
