SLCPD Officers Arrest Two for Weapons Possession

SALT LAKE CITY — Officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department, while on proactive patrol, safely arrested two men for possession of a firearm by a restricted person and possession of drug paraphernalia.

This investigation started at 7:17 p.m. on Wednesday, December 21, 2022, when an SLCPD Officer assigned to the Central Division Bike Squad saw a car commit a traffic violation on 200 West.

The officer conducted a traffic stop at 320 West 500 South and contacted the driver, later identified as 24-year-old Chase Nelson. The officer saw an open container of alcohol in the vehicle, as well as a handgun case.

The officer returned to his vehicle to conduct a records check and found Nelson was a restricted person who cannot legally possess a firearm.

Officers detained Nelson and the other individuals in the car.

Officers searched the car pursuant to their investigation and located two handguns as well as drug paraphernalia.

One of the handguns was located where 22-year-old Marqus Cyrus was sitting. Officers determined Cyrus was a restricted person who could not legally possess a firearm.

Officers placed Nelson and Cyrus under arrest and transported them to the Salt Lake County Metro Jail.

Nelson and Cyrus were both booked on charges of possession of a weapon by a restricted person and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

A photo of the firearms and paraphernalia is being released. Media may use this photo with photo credit to the Salt Lake City Police Department.
