SLCPD Determines Report of Active Shooter at West High School Is Unfounded
SALT LAKE CITY — Today, the Salt Lake City Police Department quickly and safely determined a reported active shooter at West High School to be unfounded.
This investigation started at 9:37 a.m., on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, when SLC911 received a call about a possible active shooter at West High School, located at 241 North 300 West.
Officers throughout the city immediately responded, established incident command, and developed a plan to search and secure the school.
The on-scene incident commander spoke with the school district and confirmed a district-wide school closure for spring break. Out of an abundance of caution, officers entered the school and did a tactical search. There were no injuries reported and no evidence of any gunfire found.
The Salt Lake City Police Department is working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and other law enforcement agencies to further investigate this and other unfounded active shooter reports.
“I am proud of the response from our officers and the Salt Lake City Fire Department,” said Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown. “We will do everything we can to identify the person or persons responsible for this unfounded report. These are not pranks or hoaxes; they put our community, including our officers, in danger.”
Members of the Salt Lake City Police Department’s new Police Community Response Team responded to the scene and helped provide traffic control. This allowed for more sworn officers to respond to the scene and assist with the clearing of the school.
