SLCPD Gang Detectives Arrest 16-Year-Old Wanted for Weekend Shooting

SALT LAKE CITY —Detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Gang Unit safely arrested a 16-year-old boy who is accused of shooting a gun over the weekend in downtown.

This investigation started at 1:59 a.m. on Saturday April 1, 2023, when SLC911 got a report of a shooting near 60 West Market Street.

Officers responded and found two SUVs damaged by gunfire. No one was injured.

Responding officers secured the area, located witnesses, and checked for any evidence.

Detectives assigned to the SLCPD Gang Unit led the investigation.

At approximately 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday April 5, 2023, detectives developed information about the suspect, leading them to the area of 1800 West Dale Ridge Avenue.

Gang detectives safely took the 16-year-old into custody.

Detectives booked the 16-year-old into the Salt Lake Valley Juvenile Detention Center.

Because the suspect is under the age of 18, no personal or other information is being released at this time.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Gang Unit is responsible for investigating gang-related crimes that occur within the city’s jurisdiction. The unit consists of highly trained uniformed officers and detectives who work collaboratively with patrol divisions and other specialty squads within the SLCPD to gather information and focus on preventing gang and gun violence through education, prevention, and enforcement.

One photo from the original scene is being released. Media may use the photos with proper credit to the Salt Lake City Police Department.
