SLCPD Investigating Motorcycle Crash, 1 Person Critically Injured

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department is investigating a critical injury crash involving a motorcyclist.

This investigation started at 11:34 p.m. on Thursday, June 1, 2023, when a SLCPD patrol sergeant, driving south on State Street, approached the intersection of 1700 South and saw a motorcycle on the ground with significant damage. The sergeant got out of his patrol car to provide emergency first aid and determined the operator had critical injuries.

The SLCPD sergeant called for additional police resources and asked for the Salt Lake City Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance to expedite their response given the critical injuries.

Gold Cross Ambulance took the motorcyclist to a local hospital in critical condition.

Based on the preliminary investigation, the crash occurred after the motorcyclist, headed south on State Street, at a high rate of speed, crashed into the back of a pick-up, also traveling south.

The driver of the pick-up stayed on scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

Additional patrol officers and officers assigned to the SLCPD’s Motor Squad responded and closed southbound State Street between Wood Avenue and 1700 South.

The roadway is expected to fully re-open by the morning commute.

The Crash Analysis Reconstruction (CAR) Team and SLCPD Crime Lab technicians responded to the scene.

The CAR Team is a multi-jurisdictional crash team that investigates crashes involving serious physical injuries or death. Members of the CAR Team receive specialized training in collision examination, speed analysis, vehicle dynamics, occupant kinematics, scene photography, surveying equipment, crash scene mapping, evidence collection and computer aided drawing programs.

The CAR Team includes law enforcement from the Salt Lake City Police Department and several other Salt Lake Valley law enforcement agencies.

A SLCPD Public Information Officer (PIO) responded to the scene.

No further information on this case is being released.

Neither the PIO nor the On-Duty Watch Commander are available for interviews until at least 9 a.m. on Friday, June 2, 2023.
