Body Recovered From Canal, SLCPD Detectives Investigating

SALT LAKE CITY — Detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Homicide Squad are conducting a death investigation after Salt Lake County utility workers found a body in a canal.

At this time, there are no indicators of foul play.

This investigation started at 1:28 p.m., on Friday, July 7, 2023, when SLC911 received information about a possible body found in the canal near 300 South 2650 West.

Officers got on scene and learned that as the utility crews cleared debris from a canal they  found the body of an unidentified person.

The Salt Lake City Fire Department’s Swift Water Rescue Team responded and recovered the body.

Members of the SLCPD Homicide Squad and Crime Lab Unit responded to process the scene and collect evidence.

The SLCPD Homicide Squad will work with the medical examiner’s office to confirm the name, age, cause of death and to notify next-of-kin.

SLCPD homicide detectives will respond to death investigations to determine if criminal liability exists for the death and to preserve any potential evidence.

A SLCPD Public Information Officer (PIO) responded to the scene and provided media with updates.
