SLCPD Provides Update on Deadly Hit and Run Crash on Redwood Road

SALT LAKE CITY — Today, the Salt Lake City Police Department is providing an update on a deadly hit-and-run crash that happened on July 9, 2023.

The victim is identified as 58-year-old Juan Mucino.

Detectives with the Crash Analysis Reconstruction (CAR) Team found the suspect’s SUV after the driver, a 19-year-old man, turned himself in on Monday July 10, 2023.

Detectives are working with the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office to determine if  criminal charges will be filed.

This investigation started at 4:38 a.m. on Sunday July 9, 2023, when a community member called 9-1-1 and reported a crash involving a bicyclist near Redwood Road and Indiana Avenue.

SLC911 dispatchers worked with the caller to get additional information, including the exact location of the crash, which is 755 South Redwood Road.

Officers responded and found Mucino on the ground with critical injuries.

Officers, paramedics, and the Salt Lake City Fire Department provided emergency life-saving efforts, but Mucino died on scene.

Based on the preliminary investigation, officers believe the driver, traveling north on Redwood Road, hit Mucino as he rode northbound.

The driver did not stop. Officers believe the 19-year-old driver continued northbound on Redwood Road.

This crash marks the 10^th traffic-related fatality in Salt Lake City for 2023.

The Crash Analysis Reconstruction (CAR) Team and SLCPD Crime Lab technicians responded to the scene.

The CAR Team is a multi-jurisdictional crash team that investigates crashes involving serious physical injuries or death. Members of the CAR Team receive specialized training in collision examination, speed analysis, vehicle dynamics, occupant kinematics, scene photography, surveying equipment, crash scene mapping, evidence collection and computer aided drawing programs.

The CAR Team includes law enforcement from the Salt Lake City Police Department and several other Salt Lake Valley law enforcement agencies.
