SLCPD Arrests Parole Fugitive Accused of Breaking into GarageSALT LAKE CITY — Graveyard patrol officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department have safely arrested a 42-year-old parole fugitive accused of unlawfully entering a garage and stealing a bike. This investigation started at 12:48 a.m. on Thursday, August 31, 2023, when SLC911 got a 9-1-1 call from a homeowner reporting someone entered their garage, stole a bike, and took off near 1300 East Wilson Avenue. Officers responded and immediately looked for the suspect, later identified as Amos Hayes. Officers safely arrested Hayes nearby and recovered the stolen bike. Hayes refused to identify himself to officers. During the investigation officers determined Hayes stole a motorcycle from the neighbor’s home, rummaged through another car, unlawfully enterted the initial caller’s garage and stole their bike. Officers also recovered the stolen motorcycle. Officers learned Hayes is a fugitive from Adult Probation and Parole. Officers booked Hayes into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on one felony count of burglary, one felony count of theft of a motor vehicle, one misdemeanor count of failure to disclose identity, and possession of burglary tools. Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos. No photos are available for release.
