SLCPD Officers Recover Stolen Gun During Foot Pursuit

SALT LAKE CITY — Officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department have recovered a stolen gun, an extended magazine, and drugs after a foot chase in downtown.

This investigation started at 5:02 p.m. Thursday, December 14, 2023, when a Salt Lake City police officer, in a marked police car, saw a man, later identified as 18-year-old Omario Senshaw, illegally crossing the road near 400 South Main Street on a scooter.

When Senshaw ran from the officer, he crashed his scooter and ditched his backpack.

The officer gave Senshaw repeated commands to stop running.

Other officers in the area responded and helped take Senshaw safely into custody.

Officers found the backpack Senshaw threw and found a stolen gun, a loaded extended magazine, and drugs. The gun had a bullet in the chamber.

Officers booked Senshaw into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on charges of theft of a firearm, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, possession of a firearm by a restricted person, failure to stop at the command of a police officer, failure to obey the right-of-way, and obstruction of justice.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
