SLCPD Investigating Deadly Shooting in Downtown

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Homicide Squad is investigating a deadly shooting in downtown.

This investigation started at 2:37 a.m., on Sunday, January 14, 2024, when SLC911 received several calls about a shooting near 300 East 800 South.

Officers arrived and found a man dead on the sidewalk.

Because of the circumstances surrounding the situation, the on-duty watch commander requested help from detectives assigned to the Homicide Squad and Crime Lab technicians.

During a search of the neighborhood, officers found a firearm.

Based on the preliminary investigation, officers believe there was an argument that occurred before the shooting.

Witnesses told officers the suspect or suspects left in a car in an unknown direction. A description of the car is not available.

Detectives will work with the medical examiner’s office to determine the man’s identity, age, cause of death, and make next of kin notifications.

No arrests have been made, but based on the preliminary investigation, there does not appear to be an imminent danger to the community.

This is the first homicide investigation of 2024 in Salt Lake City.

Detectives have determined the homicide officers responded to on January 3, 2024, occurred in 2023.
