SLCPD Arrest 28-Year-Old Man Who Tried to Disarm Officers at SLC International Airport

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department arrested a 28-year-old man who is accused of assaulting two people at random before trying to take an officer’s firearm and then taking a separate officer’s Conducted Energy Device (CED), or TASER, at the Salt Lake City International Airport.

This investigation started at 5:07 p.m. on Sunday, June 9, 2024, when SLC911 received a call about a man, later identified as Scott Hollis, assaulting people in the pick-up area of the airport.

Hollis is accused of punching a 20-year-old man and choking a 17-year-old.

While at the airport on an unrelated case, two SLCPD patrol officers saw the assault occurring and responded.

Hollis did not listen to the officers’ instructions.

As the officers tried to take Hollis into custody, Hollis attempted to grab an officer’s gun.

During the fight, Hollis reached for and successfully took the other officer’s TASER.

Officers safely recovered the TASER from Hollis. The TASER did not activate.

With the help of responding officers and community members, officers took Hollis into custody.

One officer received a minor injury.

Officers are investigating whether Hollis may have been intoxicated.

The motive for the assaults remains under investigation.

The incident did not result in any impact to airport operations.

Officers booked Hollis into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on two charges of disarming a police officer, aggravated assault, assault, and interfering with an arresting officer.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
