SLCPD Investigating Shooting, One Man Injured

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department is investigating a possible self-defense shooting that injured a man.

This investigation started at 2:48 p.m. on Tuesday, December 27, 2022, when SLC911 received information from several callers about a person shot at Palmer Court, an apartment complex, located at 999 South Main Street.

The callers reported there was a man outside with a handgun and another man was on the ground.

Salt Lake City Police officers from the Liberty Division Bike Squad and Patrol Division were in the area and immediately responded.

Officers safely took the shooter into custody and immediately began providing first aid to the man who had been shot.

Salt Lake City Fire and Gold Cross Ambulance responded to help with first aid. Gold Cross Ambulance took the gunshot victim to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers have recovered a handgun they believe was used in the shooting. Preliminary information from the investigation shows just before the shooting, three men were inside Palmer Court and involved in a verbal argument.

The argument continued outside and one of the men, later determined to be the gunshot victim, pulled a knife.

In response, one of the people involved pulled out a gun and shot the man with a knife in the lower body.

The third man involved in the argument inside left before police arrived but has been identified.

The shooter remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

There is currently no known threat to the public.

No further information on this case is being released.

Detectives will work with the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether the shooting was a lawful act of self-defense.

A SLCPD PIO responded and provided media updates.

Several photos from the scene have been posted to the SLCPD Twitter account.
