SLCPD Identifies and Charges 13 in Gateway Mall Assault

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Robbery and Violent Crime Squad has identified and charged 13 individuals for the assault of a man at the Gateway Mall.

This investigation began on November 25, 2022, when SLCPD patrol officers responded to an in progress fight at the Gateway Mall.

During the investigation officers learned an employee had asked several people on skateboards to leave the area in front of the business. Instead of leaving, the group of approximately 17 people turned on the employee.

The group surrounded the employee and knocked him to the ground where they punched, kicked and stomped on him. Some of the group used skateboards to cause further harm and injury to the victim.

Patrol officers attempted to locate the suspects, but they ran away before officers arrived.

Detectives assigned to our Robbery and Violent Crime Squad took on the case. They obtained surveillance video and other evidence and began the process of trying to identify those involved in the assault.

Due to the nature of the assault, and with all other leads exhausted, detectives reached out to the SLCPD’s Public Relations unit to come up with a strategic release of information.

The tips and information from that release allowed detectives to identify and charge 13 of the 17 suspects in this case.

All 13 of the identified suspects are juveniles.

Five of the suspects have been charged with Felony 2 Aggravated Assault and Felony 3 Riot.

Eight others are charged with Riot.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt

No further information can be released at this time.
