SLCPD Conducts Holiday Weekend DUI Enforcement, Five Drivers Arrested

SALT LAKE CITY — Today, the Salt Lake City Police Department announced results from a DUI enforcement operation conducted by the Motor Squad over the St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

During a four-hour operation, conducted on Saturday, March 16, 2024, officers stopped 181 drivers, issued 61 citations for moving or vehicle equipment violations, and arrested five people for accused of driving under the influence of intoxicants.

Alcohol consumption is known to increase over the St. Patrick’s Day weekend. Research shows deaths from motor vehicle crashes occur most frequently between New Year’s Eve and July 4th.

Excessive alcohol consumption can represent a significant public health concern.

The Salt Lake City Police Department works daily to identify and stop suspected impaired drivers.

Anyone who sees a suspected impaired driver, or reckless/dangerous driving, should call 9-1-1. When reporting the suspected impaired driver, it’s important to include:

●        Your precise location.

●        Your direction of travel.

●        The suspect’s license plate.

●        A description of the suspect’s vehicle.

●        The last known location of the suspect’s vehicle.

●        The number of occupants, including a description of the driver.

Established in 1909, the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Motor Squad is one of the oldest in the country. The department’s Motor Squad works to help ensure the safety of all road users by proactively conducting education and enforcement operations to remind road users of traffic safety laws.

The squad provides traffic escorts for dignitaries and helps with security, logistics and community engagement during large gatherings and special events.

Salt Lake City police officers receive training on impaired driving investigation, to include alcohol and drug recognition.

The Salt Lake City Police Department strongly encourages community members to appoint a designated driver, use a ride-share service, or public transportation if they plan to drink or engage in other activities that may impair their ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
