SLCPD Arrest Fugitive, Seize 2 Firearms, 3 Knives

SALT LAKE CITY — Today, the Salt Lake City Police Department arrested a wanted fugitive who is accused of being in possession of two firearms and three knives.

This investigation started at 9:31 a.m. on Thursday, April 4, 2024, when a community member waived down an acting sergeant for the Salt Lake City Police Department near 300 East 100 South.

The community member pointed out a man who may have been involved with a prior violent crime.

The acting sergeant and other officers contacted the man, later identified as 23-year-old Louie Martinez.

When officers searched Martinez’ name, they found he had an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

Officers took Martinez safely into custody.

During their investigation, they found Martinez in possession of two firearms and three knives.

No photos are available for release.

Officers booked Martinez into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on charges of unlawful possession/purchase/transfer of a dangerous weapon, obstruction of justice, use or possession of drug paraphernalia, and criminal trespass.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
