SLCPD Provides Update on Deadly Shooting in Glendale Neighborhood

SALT LAKE CITY — Today, the Salt Lake City Police Department is announcing the arrest of a 59-year-old man who is accused of shooting and killing a 42-year-old man in the Glendale neighborhood.

The shooting happened in an industrial part of the city’s Glendale neighborhood, not a residential area.

Detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Homicide Squad booked David Chase into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on one count of murder.

The person killed is identified as Thomas Priest.

This investigation started on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at 4:09 p.m. when a man, later identified as Chase called SLC911 and told dispatchers he shot Priest near 3075 West Decade Drive.

Officers and paramedics responded and despite lifesaving efforts, Priest died on scene.

Detectives believe an argument happened between Chase and Priest, which led to Chase shooting and killing Priest.

According to court records, Priest did not have a weapon at the time of the argument and Chase could not articulate any threat toward him.

This is the sixth homicide in Salt Lake City for 2024.

The investigation is still ongoing. Additional details about this case and the allegations may be available on the Utah Court Xchange website. For additional information and court updates, please refer to their database.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.

The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Homicide Squad is the only full-time dedicated homicide squad in the State of Utah. The SLCPD’s Homicide Squad is responsible for handling homicides, as well as the city’s attended deaths, unattended deaths, suspicious deaths, and deaths by suicide. Additionally, the squad is tasked with investigating missing persons cases and officer-involved shootings/critical incidents (OICI) from other agencies in Salt Lake County.
