SLCPD Celebrates Summer ‘Golf with a Cop’ Program

SALT LAKE CITY — Today, the Salt Lake City Police Department celebrated the conclusion of its 2024 summer ‘Golf with a Cop’ program at the Glendale Golf Course in partnership with the Salt Lake City Police Foundation.

“This is an incredibly important opportunity for our police department,” said Chief Mike Brown. “Summer can be a difficult time for kids and teens. Fortunately, because of this program, our police department can work directly with youth in our community to help serve and support them.”

The program started on Monday, June 3, 2024.

The five-week ‘Golf with a Cop’ program, funded and sponsored by the Salt Lake Police Foundation, served about 100 kids aged six to 17. All the kids attend schools within the Salt Lake City School District.

During the program, kids with different experience levels learned how to play golf with Salt Lake City police officers, SLCPD detectives, and specialists from the department’s Police Community Response Team (PCRT).

“The Salt Lake City Police Foundation is vital to the success of our police department,” said Chief Brown. “While we go out and protect and serve our community, the police foundation serves our officers and professional staff.”

The Salt Lake City Police Department recognizes the Glendale Golf Course and its PGA professional Steve Loyola for their support of this program.

The Salt Lake City Police Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization created in December 2011.

The mission of the Salt Lake City Police Foundation is to support the Salt Lake City Police Department through community connections, thereby building stronger and safer neighborhoods.

While it is the responsibility of the city to support police and keep people safe, the Salt Lake City Police Foundation was created to build community policing objectives. Community policing means preventing crime, instead of just reacting to it. The approach is to create a relationship allowing police to be a part of the community, not apart from it, so enforcement is not necessary.
