Take preventive steps to reduce risk

June 26, 2013 – The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Community Intelligence Unit (CIU) offers the following crime trend report based on reports for the two week period of June 9-20, 2013, compared to May 26-June 8, 2013.
District 6:
University of Utah, Yalecrest, Foothill/Sunnyside, Sunnyside East, Wasatch Hollow, Bonneville Hills, East Bench

  • 30 vehicle burglaries reported; eight more than May 26-June 8, 2013.
  • 21 thefts: 10 more than May 26-June 8, 2013
  • 15 vandalism cases; up 9 more than May 26-June 8, 2013

 District 7: Sugar House

  • 23 vehicle burglaries; 4 more than May 26-June 8, 2013.
  • 31 thefts; 13 more than May 26-June 8, 2013.

 District 2: Glendale, Poplar Grove

  • CIU reports an uptick in residential burglaries during daytime hours, largely concentrated in the area bounded by 400 South to California Avenue, 900 West to Redwood Road.

Warmer weather makes it easier for would-be car and house prowlers to stay out late and seek opportunities to steal. Some preventive and proactive steps you can take to reduce your risk of becoming a victim include the following:

  • Be aware: Regardless of the time of day, watch for strangers walking slowly around your neighborhood, looking into cars, trying car doors, even knocking on your neighbors’ doors when you know they are away.
  • Lock it up: Do not leave any property that is, or looks, valuable in cars or yards. Lock windows and doors and close garage doors — even while home.
  • Take notes: Write down details about a subject’s appearance, car or other identifying characteristics and share it with police.
  • Call police: If it’s an emergency or a crime in progress, call 911. In a non-emergency, call (801) 799-3000. For chronic public safety issues in your neighborhood, contact your CIU Officer.
  • Text it: Tipsters may remain anonymous. Send a text to 274637. Start the message with the keyword TIPSLCPD, which routes the information to the correct law enforcement agency. Attach photos if you have them.

The Community Intelligence Unit is a specialty squad tasked with solving chronic public safety issues at the grassroots level. CIU Officers attend monthly community council meetings within the City’s seven City Council Districts in order to share and receive information.
