SLCPD SWAT Team Assists with Sexual Assault Investigation

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department is investigating a sexual assault and robbery.

This investigation started at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday December 7, 2021 when SLC911 received information about a sexual assault and robbery at an apartment complex located in the 900-block of South Main Street.

SLCPD officers contacted the victim and observed physical injuries. Paramedics transported the victim to an area hospital as part of the sexual assault investigation. During a sexual assault investigation, an SLCPD Victim’s Advocate is notified and provides in-person support, resources and advocacy to the survivor.

During their investigation, officers learned that several people were holed up inside an apartment unit and that there was likely a firearm inside the residence.

Officers began attempts to contact the people inside the apartment unit in an effort to safely resolve the situation.

At approximately 11:30 p.m. on December 7, 2021, the on-scene incident commander requested the assistance of SLCPD SWAT and Crisis Negotiators. These highly trained teams provide patrol officers with additional resources.

By 2:12 a.m. on December 8, 2021, SWAT took several people into custody, including the person believed to be the primary suspect and a person with an active warrant, after they and others safely exited the apartment.

These are very dangerous situations and yet the actions of our patrol officers, SWAT team members, and crisis negotiators in this case highlights their expertise in handling these cases professionally for the safety of our community and the integrity of the investigation,” said SLCPD Chief Mike Brown.

Detectives assigned to the department’s Special Victims Unit responded to the scene and hospital and are leading the investigation.

The investigation is ongoing, and as such – no additional information is being released at this time.

No names will be released unless and until a person is booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail.

Two photos from the scene are being released.

Note: An SLCPD Public Information Officer (PIO) responded to the scene to provide interviews and updates to media.

The On-Duty Watch Commander has no additional updates and is not available for any interviews.
